| The 60 Watt incandescent lamps we found in
this room provided less than 25 lumens and put out a considerable amount of heat.

On September 1, 1999, Harvey Foy, our corporate sales manager,
and Terry Ford, a local salesperson, met at the Holiday Inn Express in Hickory, NC. The
manager had showed an interest in retrofitting her current lamps with high-efficient
compact fluorescent bulbs. We looked at her situation and decided to take on a
"worse-case" room for our example.
This room was especially challenging since the lamps were small and
the harps (the bracket which holds the lampshade) were only 6 inches tall. We knew that
this might be a problem so, we brought along a variety of replacement harps along with a
various sizes of compact bulbs.
By the time we finished with this room the light
output was nearly doubled, yet the total wattage was reduced from 660 watts to 122 watts;
a savings of almost 80%!

After we replaced the bulb with this 11-watt Philips compact
fluorescent lamp, our light meter registered twice the lumens with almost no heat.
